Sheff Dizzle’s music career started in a North Philadelphia church, where he learned to play the bass, the drums and the importance of dynamics. Ultimately his musicianship expanded to include lead guitar and keyboards and he developed an interest in the world of engineering.
He decided to pursue his interest and began his career in mixing at the Birds Nest Studios in Southwest Philly where he was involved on a project to produce and mix a track with Boyz to Men for the Coolie High soundtrack. In 2002, Sheff decided to move to ATL to gain more experience in the craft.
Once there, Sheff started playing bass for southern rock singer Drock. After 2 years, he left the band to start a studio to further advance his career in engineering and production. This was a natural evolution for him because of his “ear” for dynamics (previously developed in church) and his ability to play multiple instruments. Over the years he has perfected his uncanny sense of where to place instruments in a track and how to improve them sonically.
In 2005, Sheff met mastering guru Earle Holder with HDQTRZ Digital Studios, marking a pivotal milestone in his engineering career. Taking advantage of the 30+ years of experience that Earle possesses in audio engineering, Sheff applied this knowledge to develop new skills such as frequency sweeping, correcting eq and compression. He also learned three-dimensional mixing techniques from Earle as well. Equipped with veteran engineering acumen and over 8 years of experience, Sheff has earned recognition as one of the top young engineers in the south. Additionally, he is one of a few engineers that correctly uses and understands proper eq in the sound spectrum, which for example, helps eliminate those messy harmonics in the 808 drums frequently used in today’s hip-hop, R&B, and pop music alike.
Today, Sheff still has his studio and has partnered with Scrappy Music, a company that specializes in musician services for independent artist and labels. He is very active in the community and is committed to helping the struggling artist through continuous learning and fine-tuning of his engineering skills. With a highly competitive and professional work ethic, Sheff is well on his way of taking his sonic creativity to set benchmarks for future sonic standards!
